DNSChanger- FBI Online fix for Malware that prevents Internet access.
What is DNSChanger?
DNSChanger redirects your internet traffic to alternative Web sites, most commonly redirecting advertisement traffic to sites controlled by the malicious operator. This means your Internet browser is pulling up different sites than the one originally intended by the Web site operator. DNSChanger does this by sending your computer's Domain Name System (DNS) traffic to servers under their control. Also, this malware allows infected computers to be controlled remotely (i.e., by another computer on the Internet known as a "command and control" server, or a C&C server). Details about this malware attack, and how your system may have been infected, can be found on the following FBI Web site: www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911

PRTC TV welcomes C&W Cable Customers!

Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative recently announced that it has purchased all Jackson County customers of C & W Cable Inc. in an effort to tie in its broadband technology services, complete with TV entertainment, to its geographical customer base.

This purchase is part of PRTC’s advanced broadband plan to bring voice, high speed Internet and TV to residents and businesses of Jackson County via the fullness of Fiber to the Home technology (FTTH). PRTC will bring these new customers directly onto its TV network as Fiber to the Home is available to them, with the first customers coming online in early 2012.

Existing customers of C & W Cable will remain on the C & W network until PRTC gets Fiber to the Home technology to their doorstep. These customers will be notified by mail and phone as they are ready to be converted to the fiber network, which will bring state of the art, high definition TV, Digital Video Recording capabilities, premium channel offerings, PRTC’s  local Channel 9, as well as over 200 additional channels such as Fox Sports South and Comedy Central.

“As we continue to see a migration of technology, Internet, TV and mobile devices converging, PRTC believes allowing customers one simple connection backed by superior local responsibility, will help our customers feel more a part of technology,” said Keith Gabbard, General Manager of PRTC.

“As we grow the local network around all types of communications, we find that television/entertainment is emerging to be as much of a communications product as it is an entertainment product. We want to make all of the components of technology as direct and affordable as possible.”

2011

Save Rural Broadband:  Essential to Prosperity.  Vital to America.

High-speed broadband Internet access has become today’s essential service, but new government rules being proposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) could impact your access to broadband Internet service.  You can help by lending your voice to the debate.

At the onset of telephone service back in the 1950s, the federal government created a universal service policy to ensure that all Americans—including those in rural areas—have access to affordable communications services.  The government decided these were essential services that required financial support to build and maintain.  As a result, it created something called the Universal Service Fund (USF).

Like many rural companies, Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative has been the recipient of USF and invested millions of dollars over the years to build advanced networks to meet the needs of customers.  We’ve done this with the understanding that the government would continue to support our efforts through USF.  Without receiving support from the federal government, it would be impossible for us to maintain our existing infrastructure as well as expand our capabilities to meet our customer needs in the future.  As with our national highway system, the information highway costs money to sustain.

Federal support has made it possible for our company to deliver the network that spurs economic opportunity, supports educational options and increases our ability to attract new businesses to our area.  Now the government is thinking about changing the fund. But if this federal support gets cut, our town and outlying areas could get stuck on the wrong side of the digital divide.

The FCC wants to do away with USF and other financing methods that support rural, high-cost telephone and broadband services.  It wants to create something called the Connect America Fund.  While this is a good idea to help facilitate the transition to support for increased broadband services in rural communities, FCC officials need to ensure that they don’t destroy the funding that now delivers telecommunications services to the rural areas of America.

All rural consumers need to get educated about the proposed policies and communicate to members of Congress and the White House about the negative impact this could have on our community.  The current FCC proposal would penalize rural broadband providers such as our company, and put existing affordable, high-quality broadband service for rural areas in serious jeopardy.  Also, it would undermine our ability to upgrade that service in the future.

The current USF structure has been a great success story for our country.  It has enabled our country to stay connected.  It has allowed our company to deliver on the promise of affordable, advanced communications services for rural consumers and business.  But the job isn’t done.

As consumers, you can make a difference in this debate.  Your contact with policy-makers will ensure that the FCC makes the right changes to USF so that rural communities remain connected to the global world and may reap the rewards of an accessible, affordable and sustainable broadband network.

To support this effort, send a letter to your members of congress and the White House by visiting
www.saveruralbroadband.org.

Fiber-to-the-Home – Construction is Underway

PRTC's Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) crews are currently working in the Sand Gap area of Jackson County to bring the latest in technology to local homes and businesses.

The owners of Shady Lane Cottage in the Clover Bottom area of Sand Gap recently welcomed a FTTH construction crew onto their property for the replacement of  the existing copper cable running to the cottage with a new fiber optic cable. Shady Lane Cottage offers free phone and Internet access to travelers renting the two bedroom peaceful hideaway. The new fiber optic cable will allow for reliability, access to all the high-bandwidth content and services available today, as well as those we believe will become available in the future, thus improving the quality of the telecommunications services to all of the homes and businesses in our service area. This ideal spot for a relaxing holiday will benefit from FTTH and so will you.

PRTC is committed to providing a smooth transition to the FTTH network. We are excited about the many opportunities this new technology will bring to the communities of Jackson and Owsley Counties. Property owners in the Sand Gap area can expect to see PRTC FTTH contractors from the following companies working closely with PRTC in replacing the existing copper cable that is currently in place: Henkels & McCoy, Ladd Engineering, Raven Communications, P&H Construction, B&L Cable Construction, JB Telecom. Property owner inquiries and concerns can be directed to PRTC's Engineering Department by calling 287-7101. Professionals at PRTC will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Spring Showers – May Bring Spring Storms, Be Prepared

When bad weather hits, will your family be prepared? Severe storms and heavy winds can easily disrupt electrical service. Or a power outage could occur for other reasons. One item to be sure and have on hand is a corded landline phone, it could be your backup method of communication during and after a storm.

It's important for you to know:

  • Cordless phones require electricity and will not continue to work during a power outage.
  • Cellular systems and towers are not required to provide backup power, so cell phones may not operate during a power outage either.
  • Fiber-to-the-Home customers should limit the usage of phone to necessary calls during a power outage in order to conserve the battery that powers their fiber equipment during a power outage.

For safety's sake, PRTC urges you to always have at least one corded phone in your home. For more information about the importance of having a corded phone, call us at 287-7101 or 593-5000.

2010
Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative Awarded $25.5 Million in Broadband Stimulus Money

Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) has been awarded $25.5 million in broadband stimulus dollars by the Rural Utilities Service in the form of a partial loan and a partial grant, enabling a quicker expansion of PRTC's Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network throughout Jackson and Owsley Counties.  This expansion is expected to stimulate the local economy by eliminating some of the challenges that our rural geography poses. Historically, the remoteness of the areas in which we live has hindered our economic growth, broadband expansion offers a new avenue around this roadblock.  PRTC's new broadband infrastructure expansion will provide a greater avenue of access to information age jobs, education and opportunities. This investment in technology will enable PRTC to rapidly activate video, data, and voice services over their new FTTH network.

"Delivery of 21st century information based FTTH technology to the homes and businesses in Jackson and Owsley counties is expected to enhance our local economy, real estate values, education, tourism, and jobs," explained Keith Gabbard, PRTC General Manager. "At PRTC, we are excited to be able to provide avenues to economic growth for our communities. We live and work here and we take great pride in our communities. The benefits of the new network will be both immediate and far into the future ", noted Gabbard.

Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from the operator’s switching equipment all the way to a home or business, thereby replacing existing copper infrastructure such as telephone wires and coaxial cable. Fiber-to-the-home is a relatively new and fast-growing method of providing higher bandwidth to customers. Connecting homes directly to fiber optic cable provides enormous improvements in the bandwidth that can be provided to customers. DSL modems rely on copper wire to deliver signals to your home – and copper can deliver high bandwidth only over short distances. Optical fiber does not have this limitation and thus is able to carry high bandwidth signals over great distances to homes and businesses. Only fiber-to-the-home can deliver the immense bandwidth that the online and video applications of the future will require.

With online options of feature length movies for download, online gaming, watching your favorite television programs and news online, as well as the option to upload your own movies to email and the internet for viewing by others, there is a higher demand for more bandwidth than ever before. PRTC's FTTH will also bring expansion to the Peoples Telecom Digital Cable lineup, including HDTV and other features such as Video On Demand. PRTC wants to empower our customers with the fastest and most reliable network, Fiber-to-the-Home will do this.

PRTC is driven to provide greater access to the latest in technology. Phase one of PRTC's Fiber-to-the-Home project in Owsley County has been completed and deployment of Fiber-to-the-Home has already began in Jackson County. This $25.5 million award will greatly increase the speed in which the entire PRTC network will be completed.

The cooperative thrives on working together and partnering with community.  As a non-profit cooperative for nearly 60 years, its owners are its customers. The PRTC goal has remained the same since 1951 - to provide the best technology available at affordable prices to all members.

FIBER TO THE HOME CONSTRUCTION IS
UNDERWAY IN THE GRAY HAWK AREA OF JACKSON COUNTY

When installing telephone cable in rural areas, Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) sometimes has to be resourceful. Such was the case recently as PRTC began the first phase of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) cable installation in Jackson County. As you know, part of Jackson County’s beauty is its landscape. With sometimes rugged terrain, steep hills, narrow valleys and forest land, maneuverability can be difficult when using everyday cable installation equipment.

Howard Price, outside operations manager at PRTC, is responsible for all of PRTC’s construction and outside plant, and has several times seen the need for doing things the old fashioned way in areas where trucks can’t easily maneuver. PRTC has utilized R.C. Hibbitts’ crew and mules through contractors for the construction of aerial cable many times. On several of these occasions Hibbitts’ has found an unconventional, however nostalgic, solution to aerial cable installation in our modern times. One such method is that of using a mule to pull fiber optic cable up and along the steep hillsides and narrow roads. Price says, "In cases where pulling cable using trucks and ATVs isn’t a feasible solution, it is either man or mule. Manpower is often needed for traffic control and that takes away from hands needed in the pulling of aerial cable in tough areas." Challenges such as this call for a little reinforcement. Requiring only one man for operation, Hibbitts’ mules provide a unique pulling unit in aerial cable construction, not to mention an interesting site for passersby along local highways.

There is always concern for the safety of construction crews in outside temperatures such as we have been experiencing lately and with Hibbitts’ mules on the job, other crew members do not complain and are quite happy to stand back to the mule’s strength. Hibbitts said that his mule, Old Bub, can pull as much as 8 or 10 men, obeys voice commands and stands quietly while not on the job.

PRTC’s FTTH project is underway to meet the growing demand for high speed DSL service, video capabilities and the latest voice services. PRTC plans to deploy fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) throughout its coverage area. This significant investment in technology lays the foundation for an upgrade that will enable PRTC to rapidly activate HDTV video, data, and voice services over their new FTTH network.
